Supreme Commander and AI War are games where you Zapp Brannigan your way to victory. That said, there are also games with vast swarms of units, along the style of Total Annihilation. Its to prevent the player from focus fire and burning it down while it just stands there, waiting for its turn.Ī smaller number of units makes each unit more valuable and makes each decision more meaningful. Thats why some of the unique enemies get a reaction move. The boss enemy doesn't have a chance to react because its not yet their turn. By late game you have so many units its very easy to burn down even a boss level enemy in a single turn. XCom also runs into this problem late game. It would sure be hard to counter their attacks, wouldn't it? You move 5 times, then they move 5 times, then you move 5 times, etc. Imagine if you were playing chess, but each person got to move 5 times in a row. The more units each side has the more lethal focus fire is, and the less ability you have to counter it. They can't move because its not their turn. The problem with lots of units in a turn based game is that its very easy to focus fire down units while the other guy is unable to react. Turn based games generally work better with a smaller number of units.
